A Chromebox becomes a managed digital-signage device once it is enrolled in Google Chrome Device Management (CDM) and set to auto-launch a kiosk app. This article covers the enrolment and the kiosk settings in the Google Admin console. Allow about 20 minutes per device, less once the organisational unit settings are in place.

Before you begin

Enrol the Chromebox in Chrome Device Management

  1. Turn on the Chromebox.
  2. Follow the on-screen prompts until the sign-in screen appears. Do not sign in.
  3. Press Ctrl + Alt + E to open the enrolment screen.
  4. Enter your Google Workspace username and password.
  5. Select Enroll device.

The device registers with Chrome Device Management and shows a confirmation.

  6. On the sign-in screen that follows, sign in with your Google Workspace account.

Add the kiosk app

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console with your administrator account.
  2. Go to Devices → Chrome Devices.
  3. Select the Chromebox, then select Device settings.
  4. Choose the organisational unit the settings apply to — the top-level unit or the child unit that holds your displays.
  5. Scroll to Kiosk Settings and select Manage Kiosk Applications.
  6. In the Kiosk Applications panel, select Chrome Web Store, then enter the app ID or search for the app.
  7. Select Add.
  8. Select Save.

Set the kiosk app to auto-launch

  1. Return to Device settings for the same organisational unit.
  2. Scroll to Kiosk Settings and, in Auto-Launch Kiosk App, enter the app ID.
  3. Select Save.
Keep the device powered on and connected to the internet while the settings apply. Changes made while a device is offline take effect after its next restart.

Verify it worked

Restart the Chromebox. It starts straight into the kiosk app without showing the sign-in screen. When the app connects to your platform domain, it shows a Register this display screen with a registration code — continue with Register a new display or device.

Troubleshooting

The kiosk app does not launch after restart

Cause. The device was offline when you saved the settings, or the device sits in a different organisational unit from the one you configured.

Fix. Connect the device to the internet and restart it. In Devices → Chrome Devices, confirm which organisational unit the device belongs to.
