Google Chrome Device Management (CDM) manages ChromeOS displays remotely once they are enrolled with your organisation's Google Workspace account. Organisational units (OUs) define the settings each device inherits, so set up your OU structure before you enrol devices. Allow about 15 minutes.

Before you begin

  • A Google Workspace account with super admin access.
  • A decision on your OU structure. A recommended layout is 1 top-level OU for the project (for example YourBrand Screens), a child OU per environment (Development, Stage, Production) and, under each, an OU per display type.

Create the organisational unit

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console.
  2. Go to Directory → Organisational units.
  3. Select the + (create) button.
  4. Enter a name and, if useful, a description.
  5. Select Create.
  6. Repeat steps 3–5 for each environment and display-type OU in your structure.

Define the device settings for the OU

  1. Go to Devices → Chrome Devices.
  2. Select the organisational unit you created.
  3. Select Settings → Device settings.
  4. Work through the setting groups and save each one:
    • Sign-in Settings
    • User & Browser Settings
    • Device Update Settings
    • Kiosk Settings — run devices in kiosk mode and manage kiosk applications

Assign the kiosk player to the OU

  1. Go to Devices → Chrome → Apps & extensions → Kiosks.
  2. Select the organisational unit.
  3. Select the + (add) button and add the kiosk player app that devices in this OU run.
  4. Define the kiosk app settings, including auto-launch, then save.
Test new settings on a small number of devices before you apply them to every device in production.

Verify it worked

The new OU appears under Directory → Organisational units, and Devices → Chrome → Apps & extensions → Kiosks lists the kiosk player against it. A Chromebox enrolled into this OU starts into the kiosk app.
