# Update a store code

> Change a store's unique code in HQ Admin, and update it in AEM first if AEM is your content management system.

The store code is the key that ties a store to its Retail Admin staff users and to connected systems such as Google Business Profile and other Internal Systems. You change it on the store's **Store Details** tab in HQ Admin.

## Before you begin

- An HQ Admin account with the Admin role.
- The new code, checked against your code scheme so it stays unique across all stores.
- If you use AEM: the code already updated and published on the matching location in AEM.

## Steps

1. In the left navigation, select **Stores / Branches**.
2. Find the store, using the text search under **Store Name** if the list is long.
3. Select the store name. The store opens on the **Store Details** tab.
4. In **Store Code**, replace the existing code with the new one. To let the platform create one, select **Auto-Generate Code** instead.
5. Select **Save Changes**.

> **Important:** Store codes are how Retail Admin staff users are associated with their store and how the platform matches stores in connected systems. After changing a code, check that the same code is used in your retail-staff-user upload and in Google Business Profile.

## Verify it worked

The **Stores / Branches** list shows the new value in the **Store Code** column for that store. Use the copy icon next to it to paste the code into other systems.
